Belmont 145: The Day in Pictures

After spending a long weekend in the Big Apple, we're back in the B-lo and taking a breath after an exciting Triple Crown series that culminated in Palace Malice's big win in Saturday's Belmont Stakes. The day ended up being picture perfect after the onslaught of rain that the metropolitan New York area experienced on Friday and in the early Saturday morning hours.

It was an exciting race that came down to two Hall of Fame jockeys battling it out at the top of the stretch with Mike Smith avenging his Belmont loss on Paynter last year with the victory aboard the son of Curlin. As a big fan of Curlin, I am punching myself in the face for not using him. Worse yet, in my 4/26 post on the Sports, Ink blog in my annual Degrees of Separation post I listed the following two horses in the "Afleet Alex Division" and I quote:

The Afleet Alex Divison: Horses that won't win the Derby, but will have to be respected and could hit the board. Those qualifying here have the potential to become a Classic winner down the road in either the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes.
Palace Malice: Late charger who seems to be a Belmont horse to me. I like him very much, and will keep an eye on his draw, his daddy Curlin won the Preakness and was nosed out of the Belmont.
Oxbow: Still waiting for this one to show up. Thinking it may be in the Belmont where he may savor the Test of a Champion.
Yeesh....did I cash on either? Take a wild guess. Maybe I should read myself more often! Anyways the weekend was a blast and the Space Gal and I took in the Big Apple with gusto. She even managed to make the Fashion at the Races blog (red dress, white fascinator).
My post race recap of the Belmont for The News can be found here. I also live blogged during the stakes portion of the races at the Sports, Ink blog from Big Sandy. My paper picks of Revolutionary-Oxbow-Freedom Child didn't quite pan out, although I felt very positive about Oxbow running a big one and he sure did respond and paid fairly handsomely for the place and show spots.
Our next assignment will be up north early next month where we'll be covering the Queen's Plate, one of my favorite races of the year up at Woodbine in Toronto. We'll have a post up later this week discussing likely contenders and some early thoughts after this weekend's Plate Trial win by Dynamic Sky.
Here are some pictures from Belmont Stakes Day with some color commentary mixed in..

Belmont 2012: The Weekend in Pictures

Union Rags in the Post Parade
That's your 2012 Belmont Stakes champion, 3-Union Rags, who edged 9-Paynter at the wire on Saturday afternoon before over 85,000 hearty racing fans and a pretty healthy television audience (5.4 rating/13 share). It was a great weekend, despite the hollow news on Friday morning that I'll Have Another's date with destiny would take a back seat to a lower left tendon issue.

Despite the traffic difficulties we still arrived in time to catch the Jaipur and the Brooklyn and have the photos of both finishes of the two stakes held on Friday afternoon before 5,415 fans. The Space Gal actually asked me if they were racing on Friday as we entered the gate, she'd never been to Big Sandy on a non-Belmont Stakes Day.

My commentary for the TBN and wrap up can be found here. As for the wagering, I was looking good going into the finale in the $1M guaranteed Pick-4, which had a pool over $2.8M with the selections I provided in the previous blog, with 4-Atigun paying over $2,800 if he won. I took a stand against Union Rags, and if not for Mike Smith letting him through the rail, I'd be cashing a P-4 ticket on Paynter.  Oh well, sometimes you have to go with your gut. He finished the race in a pedestrian 2:30.42, in case you missed the final time.

Here are some pictures from the weekend for your viewing enjoyment, most courtesy of Space Gal Enterprises (she even hooked up for a cameo with Joe Torre in the paddock, but wouldn't let me post the photo [boo] -- she loves to be Miss Celebrity Sighting):

That's a wrap on the 2012 Triple Crown season. It's been a fun one, we almost had a historic one. I'm a firm believer I'll see a Triple Crown winner one of these days...

Things That Make Me Go Hmm...

I wasn't that big of a C&C Music Factory fan, but for some reason that song was in my head today, and after searching the lyrics I remembered why I wasn't a big fan (I'll spare you all the link)...but certain things do make me go hmm when it comes to racing:

- The guy at my neighborhood corner newstand adds a quarter to the stated DRF price...

- NYRA has started to reach out to racing bloggers with media reports and press releases....

- The NTRA Safety & Integrity Alliance slipping in a visit to Delaware Park before reviewing Belmont Park. This after following the Triple Crown trail with two of its first three accreditation reviews being Churchill and Pimlico...

- The quinella bet has always made me go hmm...

- After the Derby, the ALL button makes me go hmm....

- Mike Smith pitching Chantal to ride Mine That Bird in the Belmont definitely makes me go hmm...

- The first time a turf horse tries the poly makes me go hmm...

- Seeing a tail bunched and tied up in the post parade makes me go hmm...

- Only betting Canadian money at Fort Erie (they no longer will be taking USD at the windows) this year makes me go hmm...

- Seeing Javier and/or Julien on a longshot on the turf always makes me go hmm...

- Zenyatta vs. Rachel (in either Classic) makes me really go hmm....

Not Those Jockeys

Sorry to those Jim Palmer fans out there that thought the new reality show was about underwear models...wrong Jockeys! It's all about the seven Left Coast jockeys who will be premiering in Animal Planet's new reality show tonight (channel 282 on DirecTV) at 9pm where the first two episodes will be played. Robert from They're in the Gate has written a nice review (he's says watching it on HD is the bomb) on the opening episode, check his site out if you want to get a sneak peak at what's to come. I've got Orville on notice and am looking forward to hunkering down in the Space Den, Space Kid in tow (starting him young) to watch the opening two episodes. I also hear there is some romance, hopefully not of the Leah-Hosea Top Chef variety. It scares me a little betting on either Sutherland or Smith knowing they are an "item" and the distractions that can result. Ask Tim from The Apprentice 5, a prime example of a reality show dude whose stock faltered once a chick got into his head....stay tuned.

Other writeups all around the TBA on Jockeys can be found at Post Parade, Triple Dead Heat, Amateur Capper, Owning Racehorses, Superfecta and Mary Forney, to name a few.....Enjoy. Here's a little preview from the Fast Track Love episode provided courtesy of the Animal Planet:
