- On this date in 1944, Hollywood Park, host of the inaugural Breeders Cup, reopened after three years following the attack on Pearl Harbor, where it was used primarily as a storage facility on Sunday, December 7, 1941.
- On November 1, 1947 Man o' War died at Faraway Farm in Lexington. He was ceremoniously buried three days later. He won 20 of 21 races and $249,465 in purses, and many considered him one of the best race horses of all time.
- Finally in 1938, in front of approximately 40,000 fans at Pimlico, the infamous match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral, glorified in the 2001 book and 2003 motion picture, took place for a purse of $15,000. Watch and enjoy (and check out the fans in the infield running amok following the action...high comedy).
