This edition of DYK features the ladies....
- On December 1, 1982, the first race to feature mother (Patti Barton - 38) and daughter (Leah Barton - 19) jockeys occurred at Latonia Race Track (now Turfway Park) in Florence, Kentucky. Patti finished fifth aboard Tam's Angel while Leah was tenth on Diane's Ms. Lolly. Later on son Jerry also became a jockey as well as jockey turned sportscaster Donna Barton Brothers (see inset) who finished her career with 1,130 victories, just shy of her mom's 1,202 total. Talk about your racing family! Guess what they talked about over Thanksgiving turkey...
- On December 2, 1936, the Fair Grounds in New Orleans, licensed its first female trainer, Meryl Eckhardt of Flint, Michigan. I found it interesting that this factoid wasn't even listed on the Fair Grounds website within their historical section?
