This one of those grade 1 races that you need to stick to your convictions when heading to the windows. Otherwise, you'll be driving yourself crazy, examining every horse/track/training angle, right up until you place your bet. I'm going with a pretty basic angle that has been consistent when trying to figure out major 3 year old races. Here it is... I'm eliminating all horses who did not either win or come close in their last 2 turn race on dirt while posting a legitimate beyer speed fig. My contenders are Macho Again, Pyro, Harlem Rocker and Mambo in Seattle. If Macho Again will be formidable if he can move forward off his very game Jim Dandy performance. Pyro suffered a poor start in the Dandy, compromising his chances to get to the finish line first. Mambo in Seattle comes from top shelf connections and brings in 3 win race streak. His last was an impressive 2 turn win on the main track. I believe each one of these three contenders will benefit from putting in excellent last race efforts in Saratoga. That leaves one horse who could quite possibly be a big underlay in this field... Harlem Rocker. Without quetsion his connections have been pointing him towards this race since the Spring when he passed on the Preakeness and Belmont. A pre-Preakness R. Dutrow said Rocker was the only 3 year old that might be able to run with Big Brown. I like his post, jockey, pedigree and trainer. JB's picks for the Travers: 1. Harlem Rocker 2. Pyro 3. Mambo in Seattle 4. Macho Again saver: Tale of Ekati Good Luck!
A bean counter by trade, I married the Space Gal in August 2007 (ironically a journalism major from Penn State). I became a horse racing enthusiast in 2003, and have read as much as possible on the Sport of Kings since.
