Big Apple Triple at Stake Today at the Spa

I wanna be there
Wanna go back down and lie beside the sea there
With a tin cup for a chalice, fill it up with good red wine
And Im a chewin on a honeysuckle vine

~Jimmy Buffet (1974, Tin Cup Chalice)

Finger Lakes shipper Tin Cup Chalice goes for a $250K bonus today in his attempt to complete the first Big Apple Triple in history. After winning the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont in June and the New York Derby at Finger Lakes in July, he faces some tough competition in getting it done today at Saratoga in the nine furlong Albany Stakes. Big Truck (winner of the Tampa Bay Derby, ML 7-2) and Ichabad Crane (winner of the Tesio and show finisher at the Preakness, ML 5/2) try and stop TCC (ML 2-1) from taking the third leg of the Big Apple Triple, a series that began in 1999. I was at the Spa in 2006, when 17-1 Indian Hawke (who looked terrific in the paddock that day) upended Ferocious Won's bid for the triple. It appears the Chalice has some big obstacles today before he gets to drink from that quarter million dollar cup. Last year, Stunt Man stilted Chief's Lake in his attempt at the triple at the Spa.

With week five starting today, the jockey race has become extremely tight with five jockeys within 2 wins of each other. Alan Garcia and Edgar Prado have joined the fray and Johnny V holds a one win advantage (22) going into today. Pletcher (12) holds the trainer lead over Rick Dutrow by three. My Toga Contest is wide open with four contestants with two wins and three folks with one heading into a crucial weekend for the Travers winner and attendance figures. It may come down to jockey and/or trainer wins in this hotly contested battle for bragging supremacy. Projected favorite: Gathering the Wind (yep, just put the whammy on you).

Anyone got a pair of cool penguin boxers I could borrow?

Nice article on La Chica Rica in The Maryland Horse Breeders Association "Weekly Bulletin" this week, check it out.

Going with the Tin Cup theme today and one of my favorite quotes "John Daly couldn't get there in two, what the hell's he doing?" (1:34)

He did it (7 for 7)! Holding off driving bids by Big Truck and Ichabad Crane in the stretch and a late rush by longshot That'srightofficer. $250K large on the bonus. Nice work by the Finger Lakes shipper.
